Emission calculation method
The myclimate emission calculator calculates the per capita emissions of every flight. The basis are fuel consumption data from two different air crafts, one for short distance and one for long distance flights (Typ Boeing 737-400 und Typ Boeing 747-400). Short distances result in a higher emission factor per kilometer as the proportion of the very energy intensive takeoff and landing is higher. In addition also the fact whether you fly economy, business or first class is taken into consideration as with different seating systems the overall number of passenger capacities changes. With more business and first class seats in a plane, the overall number of seats decreases and the CO2 emissions per person increase. The climate impact of flight emissions is calculated in CO2 equivalents which also accounts for other climate relevant emissions apart from CO2, such as NOX.
To define the costs for offsetting a flight the myclimate projects are grouped in different portfolios that have an average price fort he reduction of one ton of CO2.
The donation amount consists of those two factors: the emission amount in CO2 equivalents and the costs of offsetting one ton in projects from the portfolio. In addition, for flights below 20 Euro an amount of 3 Euro is added to cover costs such as credit card fees. In every case myclimate guarantees that at least 80% of the donation is invested into the projects.
